Market Directory
Who’s who in Ethiopia’s capital market and how to reach them — the regulator and market bodies, the firms licensed to operate, and answers to common questions. Details are a snapshot verified against the official sites on 29 September 2026; always confirm the current information at the source.
Verify before you trust. Only deal with firms licensed by ECMA. Check the exact name on the official licensee list — ECMA regularly warns the public about entities operating without a licence. If a firm isn’t listed, don’t send money.

Common questions
How do I know a firm is actually licensed?
Only deal with firms licensed by ECMA. Check the official licensee list at ecma.gov.et/licensees and confirm the exact name. ECMA regularly issues public warnings about entities operating without a licence — if a firm is not on the list, treat any offer with caution.
Someone offered me an “investment bank” or brokerage service — how do I verify it?
Cross-check the firm's exact name against ECMA's licensee list. Investment bank, broker, dealer and adviser are all specific licensed roles. If the name is not listed, do not send money, and report the offer to ECMA.
How do I start investing or buy shares?
You trade through a licensed ESX trading member (a broker or dealer). Open an account with one of the trading members listed here, and your securities are then held electronically for you at the Central Securities Depository.
What do ECMA, ESX and NBE each do?
ECMA is the regulator — it licenses and supervises the market and protects investors. ESX is the exchange where securities are listed and traded. NBE is the central bank — it issues government securities and oversees the CSD. See the Learn page for more.
Where do government Treasury bills come from, and how do I take part?
The NBE auctions Treasury bills on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, in 28, 91, 182 and 364-day maturities. Bids are submitted through the CSD system. Rates and auction results are published on nbe.gov.et under “Market & Rates”.
How do I report fraud or a suspicious offer?
Contact ECMA directly — email communication@ecma.gov.et or call the numbers listed above. Reporting suspected unlicensed activity helps protect other investors.
